SPONTANEOUS PAINTING
A painterly trinity of
spontaneous, abstract & figurative painting
Below is the first larger painting that began with a spontaneous painting process
THE 4 GATEKEEPERS
2022 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
This is how the painting looked after the spontaneous painting stage.

Second painting
CANDY CAT
2023 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
The first five paintings here I define as “fables.”
Visual fables, as opposed to Aesop’s fables which were literary. Aesop was reportedly a Phrygian slave who lived on the Greek island of Samos from 620 to 560 BCE, whereas Aakre’s visual fables I painted from 2022 to 2024 CE.
Third painting
EX-RED RIDING HOOD 2024 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm cm
The painting got its name *Ex-Red Riding Hood* because the woman in the image originally had a red hood. But the red hood didn’t fit into the abstract composition, and the hood was painted in another color – hence "ex."
Fourth painting
THE RIDERS OF THE APOCALYPSE 2024 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm (still in process)
2024 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
This painting is still in progress, but I included it to show the entire development beginning with spontaneous painting.
Fifth painting
THE HEN OR THE EGG CUP?
2024 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
One day a friend told me that he had finally found the answer to whether the chicken or the egg came first. “Oh really,” I replied, whereupon he explained that he had been shopping at the supermarket and bought groceries, including a carton of eggs. When he looked at the receipt, the answer was written there in black and white: "freely-walking eggs" (fritt-gående høner)
But after painting this work, I wonder if it wasn’t actually the egg cup that came first (all it takes is to present the evidence...).
Sixth painting
ANNO 2025 I 2025 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
I assume that all the paintings in the *Anno 2025* series deal precisely with the year 2025. Those who have had a hard time this year – or not, or who were born or live in another culture, etc. – will experience these paintings differently… or perhaps not at all?
But what do I know, I have only painted these works based on my own selections from the spontaneous painting process.
NB – I always study the spontaneous stage from all four sides before I decide which figures I ultimately choose.
Seventh painting
ANNO 2025 II 2025 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
The second painting in the *Anno 2025* series.
Eighth painting
ANNO 2025 III 2025 – Acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
I will continue to add new works to the *Anno 2025* series – the year that still carries its special light.
Or as the musician, songwriter, and visual artist Svein Tang Wa said at the beginning of the song *Kan’kje Finna Fingen Min*:
"Nå går nåttå opp i limingå, å mørknå skrompe inn".
